What is this?
All day long I was getting this “Load MP feeder with Custom Type 6 paper” error message on my Lexmark MS510dn. Does this only happen between ubuntu and Lexmark? No idea, probably not. However I wanted to emphatically point out my OS just in case.
I must have wasted a collective half a day on this when I add up all my time wasted. These kind of things are brutal.
Great news – I’m about to save you half a day and all you have to do is enjoy it. This post is just to save you the pain.
What I tried first
First, take note of what I tried before doing what actually worked in case your story is slightly different from mine and requires other steps or a path:
- Updated firmware (Yes, full firmware upgrade – not a bad thing to do this anyways, I suppose, for network security, etc)
- Adjusted tray 1 sensors to click against paper
- Software settings in ubuntu, namely: PDF software settings at the print stage
- Remove printer driver and re-installed – probably 25 different times via Ubuntu ‘Printers’ dialogue in settings
- Re-familiarized myself with CUPS at localhost port 631 on ubuntu which is kind of cool on its own so not really time lost
- Spent way too much time wine-and-dining various AI bots…
Fail. All.

What worked.
First, the principle: you are going to try to, on the physical printer, go into the settings and force the main paper tray to use your specific paper size (that you have already confirmed) and not whatever is probably set there now. Here are the exact steps on a Lexmark MS510dn:
- Push the
Homebutton SettingsPaper MenuPaper Size / TypeTray 1 Size: LETTER (mine was set to ‘universal’ or something goofnut)- Back button arrow to go back up a level in menu
Tray 1 Type: PLAIN PAPERHomebutton to save and exit
