Flat Earth: The Firmament, Cosmoloy, Space, and the Bible

As I continue down this most exciting journey of cosmology and figuring out how things really work out there, I am continually pulled back to the truth of the Bible on this topic.  Every time someone presents a view that opposes the Biblical position on cosmology, it starts to fall apart, or does not sufficiently convince me to move away.  Do I have any biases?  Yes, indeed. I believe that the Bible is true.  In times past I used to somewhat suppress certain scriptures to help me cope in a world that opposed them and presented weird options, but as I age, I realize this is absolutely the wrong approach and that I can confidently continue to stand on the Bible in every aspect of my life: spiritually, physically, scientifically, etc.

There are two camps of Bible believers, I have noticed: the first camp says ‘you don’t have to think about this stuff, just believe, brother” whilst the other camp (of which I’m obviously part) says “Don’t just believe it but inquisitively question and marvel at how all this works”.  An example to demonstrate the two camps would be the scripture where Jesus walks on water.  The first camp would say ‘Don’t think, just believe’ whereas I would say “Believe, then marvel at the omnipotent God who dominated the physical realm, then consider, for pure interests sake, what natural/physical laws or norms were trampled for this miracle to occur!”  The more I investigate what God has done, the more I marvel.

And with that background, let’s continue.

Today I had a eureka moment while I was meditating on Genesis 1.  I’m not entirely sure how I have seen so many videos about this, read these verses countless times, and yet never quite ‘seen’ it, but that seems to to be how the Word of God works.

And God said, Let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters, and let it divide the waters from the waters. And God made the firmament, and divided the waters which [were] under the firmament from the waters which [were] above the firmament: and it was so. (Genesis 1:6-7)

The key is the word firmament so first click this link here to study this word from the original language before continuing.  Now, take a minute (promise it doesn’t take much more) before reading my comments and really visualize what is happening here.

Here’s what I see happening, and feel free to correct me in the comments below as usual, if I’m off base:

  • There is at the start a unified mass of water
  • Then, a firm, supportive, strong firmament is created and inserted somewhere in the middle of this mass of water
  • The firmament is raised way up thereby dividing the waters below from those above the firmament thereby leaving a vast space in between being the space in which we live and our atmosphere (or atmos-dome if you don’t like the round earth vocab)

A while back I stumbled across what I thought was one of the funniest things ever – some dude out there actually thought that there was water up where space was purported to be.  Water? In space? Give me a break!

But now I truly have to consider this theory based on the above.

Then, as it would be, I stumbled across something incredibly relevant to this topic.  A ‘star in a jar’.  Take a moment, and while watching this video, consider how many interesting connections can be made to the scriptures:

I just happened to be in Matthew chapter 1 on the same day as Genesis 1 (God bless those Bible-in-a-year programs!) and the wise men leave Herod and behold a star was there to lead them.  Was this a new star?  Sure seems to be.  But how could that be?  Based on the star in a jar, it would take nothing more than concentrated sound on a bubble in water to provide this convenient beacon of hope.

But the moment I considered this I asked another question: What exactly is the purpose of the stars?  I noticed in this scripture the purpose of that star was to guide the wise men to the birth place of Jesus.  But what about the rest? The answer is found here:

And God said, Let there be lights in the firmament of the heaven to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs, and for seasons, and for days, and years: And let them be for lights in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth: and it was so. And God made two great lights; the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night: [he made] the stars also. And God set them in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth, And to rule over the day and over the night, and to divide the light from the darkness: and God saw that [it was] good. (Genesis 1: 14-18)

The whole Bible is about *purpose*.  Everything has a purpose: life, death, joy, pain, suffering, sickness, marriage, child birth, blah, blah and blah.  Although our minds aren’t able to understand the fullness of the purpose, there is a purpose, no doubt.  With the stars, moon, and sun, however, he didn’t leave anything to the imagination.  He told us straight up why he made them and here is the bullet list:

  • to divide the day from the night “Oh look, stars. It’s night time. Cool.”
  • for signs: a signal (literally or figuratively), as a flag, beacon, monument, omen, prodigy, evidence, etc.:—mark, miracle, (en-) sign, token. “Look! A star leading us to the birthplace of Jesus!” or “Woah.  Look at the stars… man.  There MUST be a God!”
  • for seasons: appointed place, appointed time, etc “Look at the stars.  It must be June.”
  • for days: a 24 hour day, a period of time, a measurement of time, etc “Hey, it’s 4pm.”
  • for years: a measurement of time, a year. “I am 37 years old now.”

And so the stars in general, and the star the wise men saw, fulfilled and continue to fulfil their purpose for which they were intended.

Some believers responded to my proposal that the firmament may still be there with water above it, by saying that the firmament was destroyed at the point of Noah’s flood and that’s where the water came from (when the whole dome collapsed). But from my understanding and study, the Bible didn’t say that it was ‘destroyed’.  It said the ‘windows of heaven were opened and the fountains of the deep’.  It’s an assumption to believe it was fully destroyed versus a hole (literally translated to a ‘window’) opening in parts and letting the waters from above through into the space where we are below the firmament.

In the six hundredth year of Noah’s life, in the second month, the seventeenth day of the month, the same day were all the fountains of the great deep broken up, and the windows of heaven were opened. (Genesis 7:11)

The word ‘window’ above means “lattice, window, sluice” and from my understanding, windows were designed to be opened and closed so it’s a much stronger argument to believe that the firmament is still there and the windows were simply opened and closed at some point.

Let’s look at Genesis 1:14-18 again:

And God said, Let there be lights in the firmament of the heaven to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs, and for seasons, and for days, and years: And let them be for lights in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth: and it was so. And God made two great lights; the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night: [he made] the stars also. And God set them in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth, And to rule over the day and over the night, and to divide the light from the darkness: and God saw that [it was] good. (Genesis 1: 14-18)

I have only one point of study left that I need to somehow find the answer to.  In English the above is translated to ‘in’ the firmament.  However, when I looked up the original there is no translation for the preposition ‘in’.

So could the physical location of the stars, moon and sun be below or above the firmament (the stars)? Possibly.  I currently tend to favour the position that all of it sits either *in* in the firmament or behind it.

Let’s keep the journey going, shall we?

  1. I am so happy to see some one actually contributing more light on this aspect of our real God made world. I have been searching for answers for a while and continue just about every day. thank you for some new information in reference to stars, and the Bible. Keep up the good work.

  2. Hey Wayne, love your blog. In answer to your thoughts about, “So could the physical location of the stars, moon and sun be below or above the firmament (the stars)?” I believe that the Bible teaches that the stars are angel, the heavenly host. Some try to make this poetic. But, Revelation says the dragon swept a third of the stars or ‘angels’ down to the earth. Also, some left their abode and are considered wandering stars aka planets. Mars, Venus, Jupiter, et al.

God bless you bro. Our blog is: JesusPreacher.com if you’d care to have a look.

    1. Hey brother. Well, in fact I did some study on this a bit later than this blog it looks like. But… Did I blog about my study of that word? Let me check…. it appears that i did not blog this. Weird. It must have been a long email to someone. Anyway, the crux of the matter it this: I did a very long study on the preposition ‘in’ located in Genesis 1: 14 when God explains where he stuck the stars, sun and moon. Here is the scripture from KJV version: “And God said, Let there be lights in the firmament of the heaven to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs, and for seasons, and for days, and years.” So, I thought does ‘in’ mean ‘inside’ or … what? So I went down a long road and discovered that Hebrew works like Korean (not that you know Korean, but conveniently I studied a bit and grammar worked the same) where the proposition sticks on the end of a noun. Example is this: “I went to the store” would be “I store-to went.” In this case, indeed, the Hebrew does this “firmament-in” And this ‘in’ is designated for ‘inside’ I discovered after that journey. So, based on a purely biblical study, these items listed in verse 14 must be located *inside* the firmament. And, as you probably know, the firmament is ‘firm’. Therefore, if you believe the Bible, you have to either toss those parts, or, there is zero chance that anyone can reach the sun, moon, stars, or ‘planets’. I choose the Bible and the Bible matches the observations of my physical senses. I try not to complicate this short life…

  3. I myself just started studying this concept of belief when it was brought to my attention and I believe it to be very true after strenuous research. Now upon my current beliefs I know for sure these things are to be true, the earth is flat, the firmament exists and the government knows this to be true and thats where the lie of we went to space and landed on the moon stems from basically saying the bible is a lie and we can leave this planet at will with enough money a smart ship and a smart suit it is one of the biggest lies that has been told to the public for years there is a God and he is coming but before he comes there will be a great deception to gather recruits to stand against God so I urge you to heed my warning and do your own research and make sure your on right side because wether you believe or dont believe this is happening! And for anyone reading this already in the know or currently “awake” the term not the act YOU ARE NOT ALONE🙏

  4. I firmly (pun intended) believe that the firmament is still intact and the water remains up there. As you state, the Bible doesn’t say that the firmament was destroyed. Furthermore, we have Genesis 8:2 “The fountains also of the deep and the windows of heaven were stopped and the rain from heaven was restrained”. It’s truly awesome to contemplate being surrounded by all that water! The Creator has assured us that there would never again be a flooding of the earth. The present day panic over climate change and the melting of the ‘polar ice caps’ would be non-existent if this truth were believed. What peace we have when we take God at His word.

  5. You present a compelling case but if we are still inside a fish bowl,it still leaves unanswered many questions. Like the first would be the supposed noise level that would stir the sun stars, ect. I know that you video seems very correct as I did some research and found that a bubble collapsing can generate around 30,000 degree heat. It happens normally so fast our eyes cannot detect it. the scourge of the the navy and naval engineers is cavitation, which will quickly destroy many surfaces, if left unchecked.

In Genesis it talks about a lesser light most agree not the moon, where did it go? We are also left with your theory to explain the new rate of decay after the flood without a canopy or firmament. One reason why Noah was not blamed for the sin of being drunk is he made the wine the same old way and drank it thus. What had changed for Noah the air pressure became much lower so things spoiled quicker. Because of lower air pressure people aged quicker no one lived over 500 years anymore soon no one lived over 200 years, then down to what the Bible say is the normal of three score and ten or 70 years. We know that the Bible says for some by reason of their strength and Gods blessing over their life they can and do live longer.

We also know that meteors, dust from comets have landed on the earth how??? Wouldn’t have to break the firmament?? Is there only the window that opens on it to allow it? With all our high tech, some people have as much and a few have more that NASA, we should see the windows of Heaven open and allow these things through. The Bible talks about the Israelite’s and Egyptians to name a few from the description of Hail stones what we would call today tar falling from the sky on people how? From celestial events but how?

  6. I was just contemplating where the stars, sun and moon were located today also. Its refreshing to read your blog where you seeking the truth. Keep it up!

  7. This will sound strange, but here goes! On a clear night 3.5 years ago I was sitting outside looking at the stars as I have done all my life when something really strange happened! As I was looking up at the stars it was as if someone slid a window open! It was a large section as in massive like 25 percent of the sky! I watched while as if someone opened a window and it was slid to the left and stayed open for about 5 seconds! During the 5 seconds the area was lit up so blindingly bright I couldn’t believe what I was seeing! The sun is not as bright as what I saw! Then after about 5 seconds it closed, from left to right, like a window being shut, and it was dark again! I have never seen anything like it in my life! And I have seen 2 UFO, but this was unreal! I told my friends about it, but this is the 1st time since it happened that I have talked about it. I am afraid of what people would think of me! But it really did happen and no it wasn’t a falling star or meteor or anything like that! It was as if the sky had a huge window 🪟 in it being opened!

    1. Well, for me things are pretty simple. UFOs, aliens, ‘sky things’ need to be treated with prayer and caution because the enemy of God will deceive the entire world through events in the sky. As such, although I don’t doubt what you have seen, and the Bible does talk about ‘the windows of heaven opening’ (GENESIS), the other things you discuss do not line up with the Word of God so I would lean to the side of caution. But God also uses the heavens and nature to draw in his seeking believers so that they come to the cross of Jesus for salvation. This happened to me so I can testify. God will show His son Jesus to all those who seek Truth.

  8. Nice analysis. Always glad to see someone taking these subjects seriously. IMO, the secret to determining whether or not the firmament still exists is to examine whether or not the waters are still separated from the waters. Reading Genesis, it says that it didn’t rain in The Garden, rather a mist rose up from the ground and watered it. This describes a hydrodynamic system akin to that of a terrarium (evaporation/condensation), which makes sense because if The Garden were under a clear dome it would literally be a terrarium. This hydrodynamic system would be the waters below, and the waters above would be the weather. The fact that the waters are no longer separated from the waters – that there are not two hydrodynamic systems present on Earth but only one (the weather) proves that the firmament is no more. God bless.

    1. I’ve never so much as considered whether the firmament would no longer exist in the way described in Genesis. I’ll give it some more thought, however, my eyes, my observations and the Word of God do no say that the firmament is no longer so therefore I must maintain that it is still there, as described, but perhaps with some cracks or ruptures from the flood when much water came down from above. Thanks for thoughts!
